The UK government operates a price-cap system to prevent electricity suppliers from over-charging their customers, which results in some peculiar market conditions. The latest announcement of a reduction in electricity prices is highly unusual however, as various hidden ‘stealth taxes’ under the guise of renewable subsidies has been removed from the electricity costs. This has been applied across the board by most suppliers, who have reduced their tariffs by approximately 3.5p…and here’s the crucial part – even off the already-low prices that some suppliers charge for off-peak electricity (eg Smart-metered low-demand periods, ‘Economy-7’ night rates, and the various Electric Vehicle and Heatpump tariffs that are now on offer). Many suppliers have night-time rates of 6-8p, and as a result of this, some suppliers will be charging customers as little as 3.4p/kWh for off-peak electric from the 1st of April 2026!! We cannot predict how long this will last, especially with the current unrest in the Middle East, however it does provide those with home batteries a unique opportunity to massively save money on their bills and potentially even offset their electricity bills to zero or even be paid by the Utility company for selling the cheap electric back to them at peak times!
